What this checks

Music metadata is everything that describes a release. This tool audits it in two layers so you can tell what's actually required from what just makes a release stronger:

  • Core release fields — title, artist, primary genre. Widely required by distributors and DSPs. Specific genres (e.g. "Melodic House") communicate more than generic ones (e.g. "Electronic").
  • Optional discovery metadata — mood tags, description, keywords. Not required for upload, but useful for organization, editorial context and how you talk about the track.
  • Promotional / pitch material — playlist pitch copy and release descriptions. Only needed if you're submitting to editorial teams or writing release notes.

The checker does not validate distributor-specific rules and cannot predict streams, playlist placement or algorithmic reach.

Frequently asked

What is music metadata?+

Music metadata is the information that describes a release — the core identifiers (title, artist, genre) plus optional context like mood, description, keywords and playlist-pitch material. It's how streaming platforms, distributors, editors and listeners understand what a track is.

What metadata does a music release need?+

Requirements vary by distributor and platform, but the widely-required core release fields are title, artist name and primary genre. Everything else the checker looks at — mood tags, description, keywords, playlist pitch, ISRC — is either optional at upload time or auto-issued by your distributor.

Does this checker validate distributor requirements?+

No. It's a general audit that flags gaps and weak spots against widely-used release conventions. Always follow the exact requirements of your specific distributor (DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, Amuse, etc.) and the DSP you're targeting.

Are mood tags required for distribution?+

No. Mood tags are optional discovery metadata. They can help with playlist targeting and editorial context, but no major distributor blocks a release for missing mood tags.

What is playlist pitch metadata?+

It's the short written pitch you submit to editorial playlist teams (for example via Spotify for Artists) explaining what the track is, its mood, and why it fits a given playlist type. It's promotional material, not a distribution requirement.

What does the Metadata Score measure?+

The score is a heuristic read of how complete (out of 60) and how strong (out of 40) your metadata looks against common release-metadata conventions. It's a directional signal, not an authoritative rating.

Does a high score guarantee more streams or playlist placement?+

No. The checker does not predict streams, algorithmic reach, editorial acceptance or ranking. Discoverability depends on many factors outside metadata quality. A high score means your metadata is complete and well-structured — nothing more.
